FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • WHAT IS TELEPSYCHIATRY?
Telepsychiatry is the delivery of psychiatric services and care through remote means, typically through video conferencing technology. This can include things like initial evaluations, patient education, therapy, and medication management appointments. The goal of telepsychiatry is to make mental health care more accessible to people who may have difficulty traveling to see a psychiatrist in person, such as those living in rural areas or those who have difficulty finding a provider nearby, and can significantly reduce time away from school or work.
  • PSYCHIATRIST VS. PSYCHOLOGIST; WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (M.D or D.O) who has completed medical school and additional training in the field of psychiatry. They are licensed to diagnose and treat mental health conditions using a combination of psychotherapy (talk therapy) and medication. They can determine if psychiatric symptoms are caused by medical or physical illness, order and interpret lab tests, and make referrals to other medical specialists as needed. A psychologist, on the other hand, is a mental health professional who holds a doctorate degree in psychology (PhD, PsyD, or EdD). They are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions using psychotherapy and psychological testing, but they cannot prescribe medication. They can conduct research, provide therapy and assessment, and also conduct evaluations and psychological testings related to cognitive and emotional functioning. I offer some basic supportive therapy and cognitive-behavioral techniques, but my main emphasis is on the use of psychopharmacologic interventions to treat mental health conditions. Individuals who require more extensive psychotherapy is recommended to seek treatment from a dedicated therapist.
  • DO I NEED A REFERRAL?
No, you do not need a referral to a schedule an appointment with me.
  • HOW DO I GET STARTED?
    Make an appointment here.
  • WHAT AGE RANGE DO YOU PROVIDE TREATMENT FOR?
I see clients ages 18 and above.
  • DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?
No, I do not accept any insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. This is to ensure the privacy of your mental health diagnosis and so I can provide high quality care without the restrictions imposed by insurance companies. If you want your insurance providers to reimburse you for the "out-of-network" visit, a "superbill" can be provided upon request. I cannot predict or guarantee how much you will be reimbursed. Please note that PAYMENT WILL BE BILLED WHEN YOU SCHEDULE THE APPOINTMENT. I have a strict No-Show policy and request that you inform me at least 24 business hours to change or cancel your appointment. I understand that emergencies do happen, and will try to accommodate as best as I can.
  • WHAT ARE SOME CONDITIONS OR SERVICES THAT ARE NOT PROVIDED?
Due to the nature of my tele-medicine practice and increasing federal and state regulatory requirements, I do not prescribe any controlled medications often used to treat these conditions at this time: ADHD (stimulants such as Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, Concerta, etc) Anxiety/panic disorder (benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, etc) Insomnia (hypnotics such as Ambien, Lunesta, Sonata, etc) There are NUMEROUS non-controlled medication options that can be used to treat these conditions. In addition, there are certain conditions that are not appropriate for outpatient telepsychiatry visit, and may need an elevated level of care: active and persistent thoughts of self-harm, suicide or thoughts of harming others eating disorders (anorexia, binging, purging) Alcohol or Drug addiction or abuse Personality disorders (Borderline personality, narcissistic personality, histrionic personality, etc) If you are experiencing any active and persistent thoughts of-self, suicide, or thoughts of harming others, please dial 911 (988 for suicide hotline), or go to the nearest ER for further evaluation and stabilization. I do not provide any legal evaluations or certifications, including but not limited to: disability forms, FMLA, school/work accommodations, nor emotional support animals. Although I can provide some basic CBT skills and supportive therapy treatment, I primarily treat clients utilizing psychopharmacologic interventions, and strongly recommend anyone who needs individualized psychotherapy to seek their own therapist.
